More Than Pumpkins
Welcome to the unofficial start of fall! Labor day is now behind us & that means cooler temps with changing leaves just around the corner. There's just something about fall that makes me happy… Pumpkin muffins baking in the oven; cozy candles filling the room with their fall scents; candy corn and fall M&M's on the table (sneaking a piece every time I walk by); and beautiful mums resting in their pots on the porch.
Every time I pull the pumpkin muffins from the oven, the memories of the season overtake me. I think of nights spent drinking hot chocolate with friends, sharing holiday meals, and most of all, family coming home. I think these memories are why fall is such a welcomed season (aside from the fact that the weather is glorious!) As we enter this beloved season, I am always so excited to prepare my home for the new memories to be made this year.
In previous blogs, we’ve talked about telling stories with your decor, and fall is a prime opportunity to do just that. While we all love pumpkins, there can be so much more to fall decor than putting out your favorite pumpkins here and there. How, you might ask, can I tell a story in my decor? How can we evoke feelings through the things we bring into our spaces? Good news, I have a few tips for you this week on creating a space that will be the perfect backdrop for the memories you’re making this year
Think Cozy
When I think of fall, the first word that comes to my mind is cozy. Amp up the cozy factor in your home this season by bringing in natural wood tones through a tray, bowl, or even candlesticks. Natural wood tends to bring warmth to a space, as can brass or gold tones which are on trend this season as well.
Focus on Texture
Another key component to bringing that cozy feeling to your space is through textures. The obvious choices are soft blankets, chunky knit throws, and pillows you can snuggle with. A few more subtle ways to embrace the textures of the season may be filling a dish with acorns (Bonus tip, if you used real acorns, freeze them in a ziplock bag before decorating to be sure little critters don’t find their way into your bowl), using vases or frames that are lightly distressed with brown tones, or introducing a beaded garland here and there.
Layer Up
When we dress for fall, we all know to layer up! Home decor is no different. Drape an extra throw across your sofa, at the foot of the bed, or even on your porch swing. It’s also a great time of the year to add an extra pillow or two to the mix. (Layering doesn’t have to be limited to your textiles…Did you catch our video on social media this past Saturday with tips for layering your table decor?)
Bring the Outdoors In
When in doubt, refer to nature for your home decor inspiration. Fall is the perfect time to fill your vases, centerpiece boxes, and bowls with treasures from outside. Fall floral stems come in all varieties. Whether you love a pop of orange or just want a subtle hint of the season with some pampas grass, don’t forget to change out your containers for the season.
How are you planning to welcome fall into your home this year? What will your backdrop be for the memories you’re going to make? I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to bring out my box of perfectly neutral fall decor, add an extra throw to the end of the couch, and get those pumpkin muffins going.
Until next time,
Rachel and Joy
